How do you calculate the energy being expended when a force is stationary?

If you hold a m ,stationary, in your arms against the force of gravity , or hold a car ,with its brakes off , stationary on a gradient, you expend energy .The force you apply however , doesn't move --so what energy is expended and how do you calculate it ?
